New Look

This year we have a slightly new look to our helmets. We have yellow outlining the blue Javelina script. We also have yellow outlining the two blue stripes on top of our helmet. We also have a JB on the back of our helmets right above the A&I Porky sticker in memory of Johnny Bailey.  The players have already packed their travel bags with the newly decaled helmet. We have an early 4am morning departure from Kingsville tomorrow.

Freshman Working Hard

Whether it's getting some extra weight lifting in, helping moving people into the dorms, running the scout teams, or whatever they are asked to do, the freshman have been working hard and are getting used to the college football lifestyle.

Rain Rain

Today there was a downpour of rain about an hour before we were scheduled to practice today, but we didn't let the rain stop us.  We adapted and moved our practice to the mine field, aka the grassy area that is used for tailgating.  The sun ended up coming out and the players overcame the change in location and had a good practice.  It was important for us to get a good practice in today since today would be like Tuesday practice for a regular game week.

Alvarado's Advice

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith. -Hebrews 12:1-2

The Lions Roar Their Way To Victory!

The Kingsville Academy Lions won their first game in school history! They won the game 22-21 thanks to two goaline stands by the defense of former Javelina Coach John Mannino and former player Eric John.  Coach Mannino is the new defensive coordinator for the Lions and former Javelina cornerback Eric John is coaching the defensive backs.

Today's Events

It's getting down to the nitty gritty. It's officially game week. The travel squad watched film and lifted weights. Coach Atterberry spoke to the team in a meeting and told them to Be accountable and do all the little things right on a daily basis. Tonight we went to the Naval base to eat hamburgers and get some bowling in. All the players enjoyed the down time together. But down time doesn't mean the competitive juices stop flowing. Everyone wanted the top score and there was screaming and yelling with every strike being hit.

All Day Everyday

This is the back of one of the shirts that was given out yesterday. Check back later for more information on the day in Hog Nation.

Yesterday

Yesterday was a busy day, we had a scrimmage type practice to simulate all the game situations we may encounter.  We also had an athletic meeting with all the student athletes and coaches.  Our athletic director Ken Oliver spoke to the athletes and then passed out Javelina T-Shirts and sweatshirts to all the athletes and coaches.  The coaches then went to the cafe to help serve food for the late dinner the school was putting on.

Spirit Towels

This is an email for our President Dr. Tallant.

The fall semester is underway, and that means Javelina football is right around the corner. To support our returning LSC-championship team and to allow all fans to show their Javelina pride, we will give away Spirit Towels at the first home game on Saturday, September 18.
Please make plans to join us and show your Javelina pride! We can create a solid wave of blue throughout the stadium that lasts game after game, season after season!
Spirit towels made possible through donations to the President's Office.

Laundry Night

I like to show the in and outs of what goes on around here and the laundry has to get done every practice by someone. So tonight is my lucky night to get it done!

Teams Captains & Talent Show Winners

Captains from left to right, Tim Byerly, Nate Poppell, Fred Winborn, and DeIra Glover.

Team captains were voted on by the players last night before the talent show.  Coach Atterberry stressed that everyone should represent themselves as a captain, on the field, in the classroom, and in the community.

After a lot of discussion and debate the kickers were declared the winners of last nights talent show.  The Coaches put together a great show but were unable to repeat as talent show champions.  Cameron Schultz and Matt Stoll were apart of the kickers group but Christian Brom aka "El Hombre" was the main ring leader.  Brom read a list similar to what is in high school year books like "Most likely to succeed", but of course the was a twist.  Everyone had a good laugh and last night was all in good fun.

Official Tailgate at NW Missouri St.

Hog Nation never stops tailgating!  For all the faithful Javelina fans who will be at the game in Missouri there Sept. 2nd please got to Lot 3 from 4-6pm.  Please RSVP to kenneth.oliver@tamuk.edu

First Day of School

Today is the first day for classes.  Enrollment is up about 13 percent this year so the campus is full of students walking to get to class.  It is always a new and exciting time for the first day of school.  The first day of school also means that the first game is right around the corner, only 8 days away.

Talent Show

Coach Atteryberry dressed as Fred "Hollywood" Winborn.

The talent show was a great success! There were coaches making fun of players, players making fun of coaches, and brothers making fun of brothers. It was great comic relief after a long camp. Winners will be announced tomorrow.

The Day

Today the players lifted weights in the morning and had the rest of the afternoon to handle everything they need for the first day of school tomorrow. We had meetings and a really good practice in one of the hottest days we've had this camp. Tonight we will have our annul talent show. Check back later for pictures and the winner of the talent show.

The Day

Today's day was filled with rest, meetings, practice, and food. The players got to sleep in and didn't have meetings until 3pm. We had practice, which ended with watermelon waiting for us right off the practice field. We then went to the Elk's who fed us some delicious spaghetti right after the Mayor spoke to us.

Javelina Football Scrimmage Video

Jubilee Ranch

Getting Better

We lifted weights and watched the film from this morning. We will be going out to Jubilee Ranch at 6pm to eat and let the players relax as a team.

Scrimmage

The first scrimmage of the fall went well.  The officials were out, there were about 60 people in the stands, the music was playing, and the players were fired up!

Tomorrows Sctimmage

We will be scrimmaging tomorrow morning at 9am on the game field with officials and everyone is more than welcome to come check us out.

Meeting and Special Guest

Tonight after our position meeting we had a special guest Shane Nelson, who played linebacker for six years with the Buffalo Bills.  He spoke about always looking for an opportunity to get better and gave us his 3 Rules, Protect the team, Mental toughness, and Bring energy and focus everyday.

Hog Nap

Now that we are in the middle of camp you will see players trying to get as much rest as possible before meetings and in between practices.  Players have been in meetings and are getting ready for practice at 4pm.

Sad News

Former Javelina legend Jonny Bailey has passed away.
Bailey, who set records and compiled yardage in football that stand as the best ever for a collegiate athlete, played football for the Javelinas in 1986-89.

His accomplishments are unexcelled in the history of college football.

Bailey, from Houston Yates High School, rushed for 6,320 yards and became only the second back to rush for more than 6,000 yards in a career. The other was Tony Dorsett of the University of Pittsburgh, who had 6,082 in his four years. Bailey surpassed Dorsett’s mark at mid-season of his senior season.

Bailey had 7,803 all-purpose yards, also the best ever at the time. He finished third on the collegiate scoring chart with 428 points.

He had 580 additional rushing yards in the three post-season playoff games but these did not count in career records at the time.

His best single-game figure was 254, that coming in his sophomore season.

Bailey opened his college career with four consecutive 200-plus yards games. No other athlete has had such a college debut. He rushed for 100 or more yards in his first 11 college games.

His best rushing season was his first when he picked up 2,011 yards, the best single-season performance for an LSC athlete. At the time, only two other college backs had ever rushed for more than 2,000 yards in a season.

Bailey ranks as the all-time leading rusher in the state and Lone Star Conference.

The Javelina ace led the LSC in rushing for four consecutive years and was the leading scorer in 1987 and 1989.

He made every All-America team for which he was eligible for four consecutive years. He appeared on 15 of the units.

He received the Harlon Hill Trophy for three consecutive years and was runnerup for the honor as a freshman. The trophy goes to the NCAA Division II Player of the Year.

Bailey was named Domino’s Pizza/American Football Coaches Association “Coaches’ Choice” Player of the Year in the first year of the award.

He was selected to the Football Writers of America All-America team and became the first college division athlete to earn a berth on the roster. He was selected to the ESPN All-America team and is the only college division player to make that squad.

The Javelina back was on the Associated Press’ Little All-America and Kodak All-America first teams in each of his four years of play, and became the first athlete to appear on the squads for four consecutive years.

Bailey was the LSC offensive player of the year for four seasons and was selected as USA Today’s Texas Amateur Achiever of the Year twice. He was selected the offensive player of the decade in the LSC.

Bailey was selected to appear in three post-season all-star games.

During his four-year career, the team compiled a 38-8 record, won three LSC championships and was ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Division II poll twice.

Bailey became the first Javelina player to have his number retired.

After finishing with the Javelinas, Bailey was drafted by the Chicago Bears and also played with the St. Louis Rams. He later played with the Arizona Cardinals.

Please keep Jonny Bailey and his family in your prayers.

Javelina BBQ

The Javelina BBQ was a great success. The food was great, the auctions were great, and so was all the people. But this bike stole the show. This custom made Javelina bike was rode in and put in the back of the building ready to be auctioned.
