The Professor

I used to call Matt “The Professor” because he was the smartest guy I had ever known and he knew the syllabus better than the professor did. He was a great football player and an even better person. He was always a hard worker and he fought a great fight. My heart goes out to his wonderful family. God bless you Romig and your family and may you rest in peace. Hog Nation sheds a tear for you #51. The world was a better person because Matt Romig was on it.

2011 Lobo Football Camp

Without an update in a while there is a lot to talk about.  I have been with the University of New Mexico for some time now.  I am really enjoying myself being close to home and learning how a Division 1 program is run.  The summer was definitely a busy one with camps, summer lifts, and 7 on 7 four days a week, there was not much time off during the summer. Now it is time for camp to start and one of the most exciting times of the year with football in full swing.

Things Are Good

It's been awhile since I have been on here and given an update, so I thought I would.  I've been really well and am learning a lot where I am at.  Things are about the same at every football program across the country right now.  Teams are either hitting the weights hard or starting their spring ball.  It is an exciting time for football know that it never ends.  Football is a 24/7 year round thing if you want to be successful.

Snowboarding Story

One Saturday I went snowboarding, something that I hardly do, and was enjoying the day other than the occasional slam to the snow.  While on the lift to the top of the mountain I heard Lil Wayne, my ringtone from my jacket pocket.  I was just going to let it ring based on the fact that we were almost to the top and I had gloves on.  But I decided to look at it and although I didn't recognize the number I decided to answer anyway.  It was a Coach who I had randomly emailed a few days ago, (again all in who you know, someone recommend that I email and keep in touch with this coach) he asked what I was doing and I told him I was randomly snowboarding and it just so happened that I was about 15 minutes from the school that he was at.  He asked if I wanted to come visit after I was done for the day, which of course I did.  The coaching profession is crazy, one minute I was snowboarding and the next I was having an interview in snowboarding pants and with a girl I went snowboarding with in the room.

It's Been Awhile

Since the last post I've made there has been a lot going on in my world. I have had many interviews and job offers.  In the coaching world your life can change within a phone call.  Again it's all who you know, I went from meeting to people at the convention for the first time to them helping me find my next job opportunity.

Alvarado's Advice

Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith. I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. ~Steve Jobs

The Aftermath

So now that the convention is over it is time to continue the new connections and contacts that were made there in Dallas.  Many business cards were collected and exchanged to keep in touch.  Since I've been home I have been emailing, texting, and writing all the coaches I saw and met to keep in touch and wish them success in the spring.

The Convention

The 2011 AFCA was a great success.  It was great to be back in Texas and to see all my coaching friends that I might only get to see once or twice a year.  I was on a committee that had us introducing the coaches before they went up to speak.  I got to introduce many great coaches, including Mike Gundy in front of about 3,000 coaches.  I also got the chance to interview coaches for the AFCA promotional video.  I interviewed a long list of legendary coaches from Bob Stoops, Bobby Bowden, Steve Spurrier, Mike London, Bret Bielema, Frank Beamer, the list goes on and on.  As far as finding my next job I had a few interviews during the convention.  It was a great opportunity to sit down in front of coaches for the interview process.  The AFCA Convention is always a fun and busy time that I always enjoy.

In The D

I made it to Dallas where the 2011 AFCA Convention will be held.  Thousands of coaches will be here Sunday through Wednesday.  It's always good to come to the convention to see friends, meet new ones, and learn from all the great coaches speaking.  This is an exciting time, getting to see some guys that I only see a few times a year and catching up with them, and hopefully there will be some job opportunities that come up as well.

Alvarado's Advice

In times of change, when you know something is right, you must follow your convictions. Keep going until you make the change-and most importantly-expect great resistance along the way. ~Tom Feltenstein

Hot Off The Press

I have been printing off resumes to take this weekend to Dallas and the 2011 AFCA Convention. This coaches convention is the biggest one in the country.  Almost every coach in the nation will be there, from every big time coach you can think of to little ol me will be there. It is a great opportunity to learn and meet new people.

Daily Basis

I have been on this website and this computer constantly.  This website has up to date openings and position changes on every coaching position that is open in the country.  So I am constantly checking it and looking for any positions that might be open.  I have been sending about two to three resumes out every day based on the openings that I see there and from other coaches that tell me about openings.  Coaching is just like life in "it's who you know", so I keep in touch with all my coaching friends to see if they know about anything out there.  Coach Atterberry and the other Javelina Coaches have also really been helping me out my making phone calls for me and letting me know some positions they hear open.

Happy New Year!

As we look forward to 2011, we're reminded of the one constant:
things change. Some changes will be for the better, and some won't be. However, the way we react to those changes is what really makes the difference.
