The Texas A&M-Kingsville athletic department won the NCAA Division II Game Environment Award of Excellence as announced by the NCAA on Wednesday.
The contest was staged to build momentum for Division II's game environment initiative and reward institutions for their creativity in advancing positive game environment. Division II schools were encouraged to submit their best game environment promotion from the "ideas that work" section on the Division II game environment Web site (www.diicommunity.org).
The game-environment award has sparked a number of innovative ideas around the country and the Javelina Athletic Department was cited for its “Javelina Tailgate Extravaganza.” The Javelinas’ season-long effort not only encouraged pregame family-oriented fun, entertainment and a positive game environment but also community involvement and engagement.
The school focused on the seven home football games in 2009 and engaged members of the community, families, current students, parents of current students, alumni, faculty, staff, student organizations and student-athlete alumni. Each of the seven home game tailgates marketed to a specific theme.
The Javelinas were one of 20 winners around the country to receive $500 for a great game environment idea. The Javelinas were named the 2009 Lone Star Conference winner of the game-environment award.
