Hogs beat the Dogs
The whole team played well and beat SWOSO 56-17.
The fifth ranked Texas A&M-Kingsville finally put together the type of game they have been waiting for all season long in their 56-17 rout at Lone Star Conference rival Southwestern Oklahoma on Saturday afternoon at Milam Field. (box score)
It was the Jonathon Woodson (Missouri City/Marshall HS) Show in the first half as he gained 187 all-purpose yards and scored four touchdowns. He carried the ball 16 times for 117 yards and three scores, had two catches for 19 yards and a touchdown and returned one kick 51 yards. His most impressive run was a 52-yard burst in the second quarter, a career long mark.
The Javelina (8-1, 7-1) defense was just as good as Woodson in the first half limiting the Bulldogs (2-7, 2-6) to minus-4 yards rushing, 46 yards passing and only two first downs. The defense was so dominant that they forced six first half punts and two turnovers.
In the first half, the Javelinas scored early and often as the offense racked up 364 yards. Woodson got the scoring started with a 3-yard run with 11:47 left in the first half. Christian Brom (McAllen/McAllen HS) converted the first of eight extra-point tries to make it 7-0.
After the teams traded punts, the Javelinas gained possession at their own 9-yard line. An 11-yard pass from Nate Poppell (Spring/Spring HS) to Christian Taylor (Houston/Westfield HS) got the team out of their own endzone. Three plays later, Poppell hit Ryan Lincoln (Bastrop/Bastrop HS) on a post pattern and he went 73 yards for his longest touchdown of the season with 3:57 remaining in the first quarter.
The Hoggies would score once more before the end of the quarter after a Corey Robertson (Denison/Denison HS) interception set the team up with great field position at the Southwestern 35-yard line. Five consecutive runs led to a 16-yard scoring scamper by Woodson with 37 ticks left in the period.
The Hog defense forced another quick three-and-out giving the team possession at the SWOSU 29. Four plays later, Connell Davis (Portland/Gregory-Portland HS) walked into the endzone on a 1-yard score with 13:52 left in the second quarter.
The Bulldogs got on the board when Preston Margain intercepted a Poppell pass and returned it 23 yards to the Javelina 7. The Hog defense prevented the touchdown, but Colton Rainey drilled a 22-yard field goal to make it 28-3 with 10:31 left in the first half.
Later in the second quarter, Woodson took a handoff from Poppell and went 52 yards for his third score of the game with 5:17 remaining in the half.
Woodson added another touchdown 21 seconds before the half ended when he capped a 10-play, 80-yard drive with a 6-yard reception from Poppell. Poppell went 7-for-8 on the drive for 66 yards and also had a rush for eight yards.
In the second half, the Javelinas put the starters on both offense and defense on the bench and gave the second unit a long look. The Hoggies kept mainly to the ground attempting only four second half passes.
Junior quarterback Daniel Ramirez (Sinton/Sinton HS) showed some wheels as he scored twice on runs of 52 and nine yards. He finished the game with 81 yards on six carries while completing 3-of-4 passes for 38 yards.
Eleven different players carried the ball for the Javelinas. Woodson and Ramirez led the way, but Myron Brew (San Antonio/Jay HS) and Arron Fisher (Orlando, FL/West Orange HS) showed up well. Brew had 40 yards on seven carries while Fisher finished with 31 yards on five jet sweeps or reverses. In all, the Javelinas piled up a season high 325 yards rushing on 55 carries.
In the passing game, Poppell was 12-for-17 for 183 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in the first half. Lincoln finished with four catches for 108 yards and a score, the second time this year he has gone over 100 yards. Overall, the offense finished with 546 yards of total offense. The only negative for the team was their four turnovers.
On defense, the Javelinas limited the Bulldogs to just 31 yards rushing and 176 yards passing. Robertson, Derrick Thomas (San Antonio/Jay HS) and Roman Pula (Tacoma, WA/Lincoln HS) each had an interception. Pula also had one of the team’s three sacks. Dustin Appling (El Campo/El Campo HS) and Robert McCormick (Corpus Christi/Flour Bluff HS) each finished with six tackles.
The Javelina punting game was also strong as Matt Stoll (College Station/A&M Consolidated HS) had one punt for 51 yards and Angel Millan (Brownsville) added two punts averaging 52.5 yards.
The Bulldogs scored a pair of second half touchdowns, one by Dustin Stenta on a 1-yard run and the other by Jordan Davis on a 2-yard pass from Stenta. Stenta finished 22-for-48 for 176 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. Bruce Hatton was the top receiver on the team with eight catches for 61 yards while Dwight Pete led the ground game with 24 yards on eight carries.
On defense, Jonathan Darby was called upon to make 18 tackles while Clarence Laster added 12 tackles and a 53-yard interception return out of his own endzone.
The Javelinas are back in action next Saturday at 7 p.m. against Midwestern State in Javelina Stadium.

Christian Brom LSC ST Player of the Week
Texas A&M-Kingsville senior place kicker Christian Brom (McAllen/McAllen HS) was named the Lone Star Conference South Division Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday for the second straight week.
Brom posted his second straight multi-field goal game of the season for the Javelinas. After missing a 38-yarder at the beginning of the game, he bounced back with a 32-yard field goal to open the scoring against Tarleton State. He kicked his first ever game-winning field goal when he drilled a 41-yarder with 21 seconds left to provide the margin of victory.
The 13-10 win over the Texans propelled Brom and the Javelinas to fifth in the American Football Coaches Association poll this week, the highest they have been ranked all year long.
The Javelinas moved up two spots in the poll after No. 3 California and No. 6 Hillsdale each lost last week. The Hoggies are joined by three other LSC South teams in the poll. Abilene Christian is third, West Texas A&M is 14th and Midwestern State is 22nd.
The Javelinas travel to Southwestern Oklahoma on Saturday for a 2 p.m. kickoff.

To break up the monotony of 9 weeks of doing the same thing, and after getting in at about 6am, we let the player out early today. The players will have tomorrow off and come back ready to go on Tuesday.

We Pull Off Another Close One
We love making the games close and interesting. Chapter 8 is in the books as a win! 13-10.
It was not the prettiest of wins, but for the seventh-ranked Texas A&M-Kingsville football team it was enough to keep moving forward on the season. Christian Brom’s 41-yard field goal with 21 seconds left in the game provided the margin of victory in a 13-10 win at Lone Star Conference South Division rival Tarleton State on Saturday night. (box score)
The field goal capped an 11-play, 36-yard drive that included a key third down conversion when Nate Poppell (Spring/Spring HS) hit Sherman Batiste for an 11-yard game when the team needed 10 yards. This was the third straight fourth quarter game-winning drive that Poppell has orchestrated.
The Javelinas (7-1, 4-1) opened the game playing well on defense forcing two turnovers in the first three Texan (2-6, 1-3) possessions, but were only able to convert it into three points. Brom (McAllen/McAllen HS) capped a 16-play, 64-yard drive with a 32-yard field goal with 14:28 left in the second quarter. He missed a 38-yard field goal in the first quarter.
The Texans got on the board 57 seconds after the Hoggies scored. A 50-yard kick return by Brandon Lowery gave TSU great field position and two plays later Nick Stephens hit Jamal Mays on a 39-yard scoring strike to take a 7-3 lead.
The Texans had a few tricks up their sleeves on Homecoming and pulled one off when they recovered an onside kick following their touchdown. On the ensuing drive, they took advantage of a pair of Javelina personal fouls and settled for a 30-yard Blake Wiest field goal with 9:57 left in the first half.
Trailing 10-3, the Hoggies responded with a 12-play, 85-yard drive the ended with a Ryan Lincoln (Bastrop/Bastrop HS) 2-yard run with 3:19 left in the half. The offense converted a pair of third downs and a fourth down to keep the drive alive and tie the game.
The Hog defense forced a punt with 1:46 left in the second quarter and it looked like the Javelinas were going to take the lead. Unfortunately, Sherman Batiste (Fort Bend/Marshall HS) fumbled the ball after a 15-yard gain inside the red zone and the Texans recovered.
The second half was marred by penalties on both teams as neither was able to sustain much of an offensive drive. The Texans came the closest to scoring when Wiest missed a 39-yard field goal with 8:22 left in regulation.
The Javelina offense picked up 357 yards on the evening. Poppell passed for 222 yards without an interception while going 23-for-39. Lincoln finished the night with a career high 10 catches for 72 yards. Woodson added 78 yards rushing and 56 yards on five receptions.
The Javelinas were tagged with 12 penalties for 131 yards. They had two touchdowns called back due to penalties and gave Wiest an extra chance to kick a potential go-ahead field goal in the fourth quarter.
The Javelina defense limited the Texans to just 239 total yards. Marcus Sanders (Houston/Westfield HS) led the team with eight tackles and two tackles for loss. The biggest defensive play of the night came when Matt Romig (Bells/Bells HS) and Dondi Cooks (Mesquite/North Mesquite HS) combined to sack Stephens for a 7-yard loss on third-and-3 with under five minutes to play to force a punt that led to the game-winning field goal. Corey Robertson (Denison/Denison HS) had six tackles and picked up his first interception of the year.
The Texans were led by running back Evan Robertson. He gained 78 yards on 17 carries and was responsible for a number of first downs. Stephens finished the night 16-for-30 for 130 yards, one touchdown and an interception. Four different players had three receptions.
The Texans had a trio of players finish with at least 13 tackles; Jacob Rowe, Damian Perkins and Brandon Johnson. Rowe had 14 tackles, a sack, three tackles for loss, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Perkins added 14 tackles while Johnson had 13 tackles and a tackle for loss.
The Javelinas held possession for 34:39 and were 8-for-19 on third down conversions. They lost two fumbles.
The Texans committed 11 penalties for 107 yards and were only 3-for-15 on third down conversions. They fumbled three times, but only lost one.

Tuesday
Tuesdays are always good because we are able to get back on the practice field. The players are hopefully rested after their day off yesterday and they have had time to get rehab on any bumps and bruises they may have had from the game this weekend. We also pass out scouting reports and the players and coaches watch film on TSU. We practiced in full pads today and had an up tempo practice today.

28-24 Hogs Win
Big Time win tonight in Hog Nation!
The ninth-ranked Texas A&M-Kingsville football team showed plenty of mettle in Saturday night’s 28-24 win over seventh-ranked West Texas A&M at Javelina Stadium in front of a Homecoming crowd of 14,500.
A 13-yard touchdown pass from Nate Poppell (Spring/Spring HS) to Sherman Batiste (Fort Bend/Marshall HS) with 3:24 left in the game gave the Javelinas their first lead. A sack by Marcus Sanders (Houston/Westfield HS) on fourth down secured the win for the team. The vaunted Buffalo (5-2, 5-1, 2-1) offense scored 24 first half points and rang up 273 yards of total offense as they built a 24-13 halftime lead that included a pair of touchdown passes to Stephen Burton and a 67-yard strike to Tyson Williams from Taylor Harris.
The second half was all Javelinas (6-1, 5-1, 3-1) as they kept the ball for 22:00 and outgained the Buffs 278-67 in the half. The Hoggie defense limited the No. 1 offense in the nation to only a pair of first downs in the half.
The game began ominously as the lights went out just before kickoff and the game was delayed 28 minutes. The Javelina offense came out slowly going three-and-out on their first two possessions.
The Buffaloes started their second possession at their own 46-yard line and quickly drove the 54 yards in just 1:18. Harris hit Burton with a short pass and then he broke at least three tackles en route to a 29-yard score with 6:37 left in the first quarter.
Later in the period, it appeared the Buffs would go up 14-0 after a 62-yard run by Kelvin Thompson gave them a first down at the Javelina 4-yard line. The Hoggie defense stood strong and forced a field goal that Sergio Castillo gladly accepted booting the ball safely through from 20 yards out with 2:16 left in the quarter.
The Javelinas got on the board at the start of the second quarter when Poppell found Robert Armstrong (Cuero/Cuero HS) wide open in the end zone from 25 yards away. That pass capped the first of many long scoring drives for the team as they went 79 yards in nine plays. Rashad Sanders burst through the line on the extra point try to block it for WT and keep the score, 10-6 with 13:50 left in the half.
The Buffs responded with another quick scoring drive. Harris found Williams for a 67-yard score on their second play from scrimmage to take a 17-6 lead with 12:56 remaining in the half.
West Texas forced a punt on the next Kingsville possession and drove 77 yards in six plays to make it 24-6 with 8:19 remaining in the half. Harris connected with Burton on a 20-yard scoring play, his third touchdown pass of the evening.
The Javelinas went to backup quarterback Daniel Ramirez (Sinton/Sinton HS) on the next drive after Poppell was dinged up on a run. Ramirez hit Ryan Lincoln (Bastrop/Bastrop HS) with a beautiful 31-yard pass down the sideline that gave the team a first down after facing third-and-11. A 12-yard rush by Jonathon Woodson (Fort Bend/Marshall HS) put the team in striking distance and then Ramirez found Armstrong from 27 yards out for his second score of the night to make it 24-13 with 5:41 to play in the half.
The Javelinas got one more chance to put some points on the board right before halftime, but a 47-yard field goal try by Christian Brom (McAllen/McAllen HS) was wide left.
The Buffs opened the second half with the ball and Thompson quickly gained 24 yards on the first play from scrimmage. Little did anyone know that WT would gain only 43 more yards and pick up one more first down the rest of the night.
After forcing a punt, the Javelinas started with the ball at their own 7-yard line. They would drive 69 yards in 12 plays and received a little help from the Buff defense as they committed a pair of penalties that resulted in automatic first downs. The drive finally stalled at the WT 24-yard line where Brom booted a 41-yard field goal with 8:25 left in the third quarter.
A 37-yard kick return by Burton gave the Buffaloes excellent field position, but they went three-and-out after Mardrick Johnson (Lafayette, LA/West Orange HS) sniffed out a sweep and tackled the ball carrier for a 4-yard loss on third down. The Kevin VanVoris punt pinned the Hogs inside the 10-yard line again at the nine.
This time the Javelinas drove 87 yards in 12 plays with Woodson picking up 37 yards on three carries. The Buffalo defense bent, but did not break and forced the Javelinas to kick a 21-yard field goal cutting the lead to 24-19 with 42 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
As the fourth quarter began, Harris hit Burton with a 25-yard pass that put the ball at midfield for the Buffs, but they were forced to punt again. VanVoris pinned the Hogs back at the 7-yard line again.
The Javelinas drove 91 yards in 13 plays with Woodson gaining 41 more yards on the ground. For the third straight time, the Buffs stopped the Javelinas from hitting pay dirt and forced a 20-yard field goal by Brom. Brom’s kick was good giving him a career high three field goals on the night. The kick made the score 24-22 with 6:19 left in the game.
Brom’s third field goal set the stage for the Javelina defense to come up big once again. They held the Buffs to another three-and-out and a VanVoris punt.
The Javelinas took over possession with 4:37 remaining from their own 27-yard line. Poppell went to work hitting Armstrong with a 29-yard pass over the middle. Lincoln picked up 31 yards on a jet sweep that saw him break three tackles along the sideline to put the team in scoring position. On the very next play, Poppell hit Batiste with the game-winning touchdown pass with 3:24 left.
Lincoln finished the game with seven catches for 114 yards and rushed for a career high 50 yards on three carries. On his second catch of the night he set a school record with his 178th career reception breaking Glenn Starks’ 33-year old record. It was the seventh time he has eclipsed 100 yards receiving in a game in his career and first time this season.
The Javelina offense gained a season high 503 yards and 30 first downs on 81 plays. Poppell went 21-for-34 for 264 yards and two touchdowns passing. Armstrong finished with six catches for 95 yards and two scores. Woodson gained a career high 115 yards on 23 carries and had a career high 243 all-purpose yards.
The Javelina defense limited the Buffs to just 13 first downs and 340 yards on 47 plays their lowest figures of the season. Safeties DeIra Glover (Hempstead/Hempstead HS) and Corey Robertson (Denison/Denison HS) led the team with six tackles each. They held the Buffs scoreless on their last seven drives of the game.
Buffalo quarterback Taylor Harris went 17-for-31 for 236 and three touchdowns which was 165 yards under his season average. Burton finished with seven catches for 99 yards and two touchdowns while Williams had five catches for 96 yards and a touchdown. Thompson became the first running back to gain over 100 yards against the Hoggies this year with 107 on nine carries.
The Buff defense was on the field a long time as they lost the time of possession battle 39:59-20:01. Kyle Voss led the team with 10 tackles and one tackle for loss. The Buffs came in averaging 3.2 sacks and 9.5 tackles for loss and were limited to four tackles for loss and zero sacks on the evening.
The Javelinas are back in action next Saturday at 6 p.m. at Lone Star Conference South Division rival Tarleton State.

Silent Night
We occasionally have meetings Friday nights, but Coach Atterberry gave the team off tonight to spend with family and friends who might have come into town for Homecoming. Tomorrow morning we will have Breakfast with the Hogs at 9am in the Turner-Bishop cafeteria for anyone who is interested in coming to eat with the team.
Finally Friday
Today the players had a Friday walk through focusing on all situations. The redshirts lifted weights and carried them over there head while walking up the bleachers.
