Hog Call

Tonight's hog call was filled with dance offs, cheerleaders, sapphires, the band, and the spirit stick.

The Day Before The Day Before

Today was the day before the day before, the players were in half pads for practice, which is shoulder pads and helmets. The players seemed loose and were giving some of the players who were doing interview for the local TV stations a hard time from across the field.  Practice focused on special teams and was followed by The Future Bowl.

Believe It or Not

We actually had a full practice outside on the practice field today. It has been a few weeks since we have been able to do that due to the rain. The weather was perfect today and after meetings and film we had practice in full pads. It was great to get out out there and get a good practice in.

No Moves

There were no changes in the top ten in either the AFCA and D2football.com polls.  We remained 6th in the AFCA and 5th in D2Football.com.  This is the fourth consecutive week we have maintained these positions. After this weekend and a battle of the two top teams there will be sure to be some movement in the polls.  Abilene Christian is ranked one spot ahead of us in both polls and have to come to Hog Nation this week.

Getting Better

"Try to learn and get better in everything you do". That was one of the messages that Coach Atterberry told the team after they were through running and lifting today.

Sunday Schedule

In the mornings coaches get in the office early to watch and grade the film from last nights game.  We have a coaches meeting at 1pm followed by watching lasts night game as an offense and defensive staff. At 3pm non travel players come in to lift weights and run while the training room is open for players who may have some bumps and bruises.  The travel squad comes in at 4pm to lift and run, followed later by watching last nights game in their position groups.

Texas A&M Kingsville vs Incarnate Word

Hogs Win

37-9 with a great showing of Javelina fans.
It was not the prettiest of victories, but in college football all that matters is the winning part and #6 Texas A&M-Kingsville took care of that by jumping all over University of the Incarnate Word on Saturday night at Benson Stadium. The Javelinas led 21-0 after one quarter and finished with a 37-9 win in Lone Star Conference South Division play. (box score)

The Javelinas (4-0, 3-0, 1-0) came out of the gates ready to play as they scored on each of their first three drives of the game. The first score was a 31-yard run by junior quarterback Nate Poppell (Spring/Spring HS) with 9:59 left in the first quarter. The touchdown was set up by a 22-yard run by Connell Davis (Portland/Gregory-Portland HS).

After forcing a Cardinal (1-3, 1-2, 0-1) punt the Hoggies drove 75 yards in nine plays. The offense used a nice mix of run and pass as Poppell scored again on a quarterback sneak from the 1-yard line with 3:13 left in the quarter.

The Hoggie defense forced another three-and-out possession by the Cardinals and the offense took advantage. A long 37-yard pass from Poppell to Delashaun Dean (Fairfield, CA/Fairfield HS) gave the team a first-and-goal at the 10. On second down, sophomore Jonathon Woodson (Missouri City/Marshall HS) scored his first career touchdown on a 10-yard sweep with 36 seconds left in the quarter.

The Cardinals finally picked up their initial first down of the game on the third play of the second quarter, but were forced to punt shortly after. The Javelinas found themselves pinned back at their own 5-yard line after a block in the back penalty on the return. After an incomplete pass, Davis was smothered in the end zone for a safety by Anthony Vela with 11:53 remaining in the second quarter.

After the free kick by the Javelinas, the Cardinals had good field position at their own 40. The Hoggie defense stood strong and forced the Cardinals to punt. A bad snap forced punter Aaron Willis to field the ball and he then fumbled when he was hit by Paul Fontenot (Dayton/Dayton HS). Corey Robertson (Denison/Denison HS) was there for the recovery and returned the fumble for a 24-yard touchdown with 10:37 to play in the half.

Just when it looked like the game would turn into a blowout, the Cardinals bounced back with an 11-play, 68-yard scoring drive that culminated in a 26-yard pass from Eric Massoni to Dominic Hamilton with 5:59 left in the half. The score ended the Javelinas’ streak of not allowing an offensive point at 189:36 covering 12 full quarters.

Woodson returned the ensuing kickoff 59 yards to give the Javelinas great field position at the UIW 36-yard line. On the first play, Poppell hit Ryan Lincoln (Bastrop/Bastrop HS) with a little swing pass that he took all the way down to the 3-yard line, but the play was called back for a holding call. It was just one of many penalties that would slow down the Javelina offense the rest of the game.

The Javelinas led 28-9 at halftime and the score remained that way through the entire third quarter. Each team managed only two first downs in the period. The Javelinas gained 54 yards from scrimmage while the Cardinals were held to 16 yards.

The fourth quarter was marked by a pair of long drives by each team. First, the Cardinals drove 60 yards in 15 plays only to have Thomas Rebold’s 47-yard field goal attempt hit the right upright and bounce wide.

Then, the Javelinas methodically drove 70 yards in 14 plays while eating up 7:41 on the clock. Sophomore Myron Brew (San Antonio/Jay HS) capped off the drive with an 18-yard scoring run on his only carry of the night.

The Javelinas also tacked on a field goal at the beginning of the fourth quarter after recovering a Cardinal fumble at the UIW 8-yard line. Christian Brom (McAllen/McAllen HS) drilled a 25-yarder to improve to 4-for-5 on the season.

The Javelina defense held their fourth straight opponent to under 200 yards of offense. The Cardinals gained 40 yards rushing on 36 carries and added 147 yards passing. Junior linebacker Marcus Sanders (Houston/Westfield HS) led the team with nine tackles and a half sack. Overall, the team had nine tackles for losses totaling 54 yards.

The Javelina offense picked up 321 total yards of offense as they sputtered over the final three quarters of action. Davis led the team with 44 yards rushing while Poppell added 35 and Woodson 34 yards. Poppell went 14-of-24 for 131 yards passing while Daniel Ramirez (Sinton/Sinton HS) when 6-of-8 for 53 yards. Robert Armstrong (Cuero/Cuero HS) led the team with five catches for 28 yards while Dean added 3 receptions for 59 yards. Woodson led the team with 114 all-purpose yards.

Trent Rios led the Cardinal ground game with 39 yards on 19 carries. Eric Massoni went 14-of-25 passing for 141 yards and a touchdown. Dominic Hamilton led all receivers with six catches for 87 yards and a score.

The Cardinal defense had a pair of sacks in the game by Diego McClain and Hakim Blackwell. Juan Asencio and Todd Lyons each had six tackles to lead the team.

The Javelinas return home next weekend for a matchup with #5 Abilene Christian at 7 p.m. at Javelina Stadium.

Rain or Shine Hog Nation's on The Grind

Today's practice was eventful to say the least. We had a walk through outside on the concrete football field which the bands practices on. We started out practice with a hot sunny sky then a quick 5 minute downpour came and went. Practice was going on as The Pride of South Texas band was echoing in the background.

70s Day Competition

The melo section of the band was dressed up for 70s day which is a competition within the band. Linebacker Roma Pula was a perfect fit in the group with his matching hair.

New Edition

This is the new sticker on the back of the Javelina buses. The team will be leaving tomorrow morning for San Antonio.

Glover Named to 2010 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team

Few awards in college football look beyond a player’s statistics to recognize excellence and achievement in places where touchdowns and interceptions do not matter. Today, Allstate Insurance Company and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) announced the 22 student-athletes chosen for the 2010 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, one of the most prestigious off-the-field honors in college football.

Texas A&M-Kingsville senior safety DeIra Glover (Hempstead/Hempstead HS) became the first Javelina to be honored with the award and he was predictably humbled by the honor. “My heart kind of skipped a beat when Coach (Bo Atterberry) let me know because it is just a blessing where God has taken me and it is a great honor,” said Glover.

A total of 112 players across all collegiate levels of the sport were nominated for the award by sports information directors on behalf of their teams, the most ever in the 19-year history of the program. From the nominations, a special selection committee named 22 college football players from across the country to the 2010 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®. Of the two 11-member teams, one includes players competing in the NCAA® Football Bowl Subdivision (I-A) and the other is a combined team representing the NCAA® Football Championship Subdivision (I-AA), Divisions II, III, and the NAIA.

“Allstate’s partnership with the AFCA to present this award is not about X’s and O’s,” said Guy Hill, vice president of sales and service for Allstate, who also served on the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® voting panel. “By shining a spotlight on college football student-athletes who demonstrate a unique commitment to serving their communities, we are protecting the integrity of the sport and showcasing its positive impact that extends well beyond the field of play.”

Glover has been actively involved on campus and in the community ever since arriving in Kingsville in 2006. He is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and guest speaker. He is a two-year member of the A&M-Kingsville Student Athlete Advisory Council and has been involved in the yearly Toys for Tots campaign and Canned Food Drive for the local Kingsville Food Pantry. He meets with children every year at the Driscoll Children’s Hospital to sign autographs and give away presents. He speaks regularly at the local elementary schools and Boys and Girls Club about the importance of staying Drug Free. He has also been involved with the Kingsville Trash off, Habitat for Humanity, Josh Fest, Take A Kid to the Game, The Day of the Young Child, The Bigger Event, Relay for Life, Breast Cancer Awareness, and Big Brothers and Big Sisters.

Hogs Win

We beat Texas A&M Commerce 21-0 in the mud bowl last night.
Despite rainy weather conditions and a soggy field, the Texas A&M-Kingsville football team prevailed over visiting Lone Star Conference North Division rival Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday night at Javelina Stadium, 21-0 in front of 8,000 fans. (box score)

For the third straight week it was the Javelina (3-0, 2-0) defense that starred in the game. They limited the Lions (1-2, 0-2) to a total of 69 yards of offense including 18 yards rushing on 23 carries.
The Hoggie defense came up with the biggest stop of the game when they led 7-0 with under a minute to play and the Lions had a first-and-goal at the 2-yard line. The defense stood strong drawing an offensive pass interference and then sending the Lions backwards. Ahmed Abo-Mahmood’s 36-yard field goal was blocked by Mike Talamantez (Laredo/United HS) to keep the shutout intact.
The #6 Javelinas put the game out of reach in the third quarter when Nate Poppell (Spring/Spring HS) connected on a pair of touchdown passes to Robert Armstrong (Cuero/Cuero HS) and Delashaun Dean (Fairfield, CA/Fairfield HS).
The Javelinas got on the scoreboard on their first drive of the first quarter. Poppell completed his first pass of the game for 24 yards to Armstrong. Five plays later, Poppell handed the ball off to Armstrong on a jet sweep and he scored from seven yards out with 10:47 left in the quarter.
The rest of the quarter did not see any offense with only one first down gained by either side.
The second quarter was not much better for either offense. The Lions did manage to drive 67 yards to the Kingsville 25-yard line, but a fumbled snap turned the ball over and stopped their momentum.
In the third quarter, the Javelinas were stopped on their first possession, but scored on their second one. Ryan Lincoln (Bastrop/Bastrop HS) started off the drive from their own 21 with a 14-yard line. Fred Winborn (N. Hollywood, CA/Grant HS) followed with an exciting 37-yard run and then Poppell hit Dean for a 20-yard gain to the Commerce 8-yard line. Two plays later, Poppell hit Armstrong on a five-yard score with 10:29 left in the third quarter.
Later in the quarter, Mardrick Johnson (Lafayette, LA/West Orange Stark HS) picked off an Adam Farkes pass and returned it 12 yards to the Lions’ 20-yard line. Five Connell Davis (Portland/Gregory-Portland HS) moved the ball to the 5-yard line where Poppell connected with Dean on his first Javelina touchdown with two seconds left in the period.
The Javelinas emptied the bench in the fourth quarter and a number of players got their first action in a Hoggie uniform.
For the second straight game, the Javelinas held an opponent to zero first downs in the second half. The Lions tallied only five first downs on the game compared to 12 for the Hoggies. The Javelinas entered the game with the #1 overall defense in the nation and improved upon all their season totals. The defense forced four turnovers in the contest and have now gone 165:35 without allowing an offensive score.
Tressor Baptiste (New York, NY/Curtis HS) led the team with five tackles, including three for a loss of nine yards. He also forced a fumble and had a quarterback hurry.
Talamantez picked up his third sack of the season while Lincoln, a wide receiver, was credited with a sack on a special teams play.
The Javelina offense controlled the pace of the game with a 17:30 advantage in time of possession. Winborn went over 100 yards for the second straight week with 149 on 25 carries. Davis added 35 yards on nine carries. Poppell went 6-for-16 passing for 50 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.
The Commerce defense was on the field for a long time during the game, but gave up yards grudgingly. They allowed only 243 total yards of offense and limited the Javelinas to 1-for-17 on third down conversions. Danny Mason tallied a game high 13 tackles and two quarterback hurries while Todd Patton had 10 tackles and a force fumble. A.J. Billings had an interception and two other pass breakups.
The Lion offense was led by Marcus Graham who had 45 yards rushing on 10 carries and caught four other balls for nine yards. Taylor Fore added three catches for 28 yards. Farkes finished the game 10-for-32 for 51 yards passing and an interception.
The Javelinas go back on the road next week to Incarnate Word for the inaugural meeting between the two schools in football. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. at Benson Stadium. The Hoggies are now 3-0 for the second straight season.
