The Texas A&M-Kingsville football team had four players named 2010 Don Hansen All-Super Region Four on Wednesday by the Don Hansen Football Committee.
The Javelinas, ranked ninth in the final AFCA Poll, had three defensive players and one special teams player honored. Senior safety Corey Robertson (Denison/Denison HS) earned first team honors, senior linebacker Tressor Baptiste (New York, NY/Curtis HS) was named to the second team and junior defensive tackle Johnny Tivao (Compton, CA/Paramount HS) and senior placekicker Christian Brom (McAllen/McAllen HS) each took third team honors.
Robertson, Baptiste and Tivao are each being named to their second All-Region team of the year. They were part of a defensive unit that is first in the nation in rushing defense allowing a school record 57.0 yards per game. The defense led the Lone Star Conference in six different categories.
Brom earned third team honors after leading the team in scoring with 81 points. He went 14-for-20 in field goals, including a 10-of-13 performance on tries less than 40 yards. He finished his career with more than 220 points and is second on the school’s all-time charts in made field goals.
The Don Hansen team carries out the legacy of long-time small college football advocate Don Hansen, who passed away at age 75 on Aug. 29, 2010. Hansen, from Brookfield, Ill., started and published Don Hansen’s National Weekly Football Gazette for three decades, selecting NCAA Division II All-America teams for the first time in 1988.
Don Hansen’s Football Gazette began selecting Division II All-Region squads in 2003. The first-team and second-team All-Region selections advance to a national ballot from which the 2010 Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-America team will be named in January.

Javelinas Possibly Playing at Jerrys World
The Lone Star Conference will know in a week whether several of its football teams — likely including Texas A&M-Kingsville — will take part in a festival of games next season at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington.
The presidents of the 11 universities that will comprise the LSC beginning next season will meet with LSC commissioner Stan Wagnon in a conference call to discuss the proposed ballgames next Thursday morning, Wagnon said.
With the realignment of the LSC thanks to the departure of five Oklahoma schools, the conference has been trying to secure non-conference matchups, originally with schools from the Gulf South Conference. Wagnon and Gulf South commissioner Nate Salant have been discussing the situation since October, shortly after the five Oklahoma schools announced they would be leaving the LSC.
“Basically what I can tell you is that I started working on a couple of possibilities with the Gulf South Conference commissioner, trying to figure out some ways to play games against each other and through that process started talking with the Dallas Cowboys about the possibility of playing some football games at their stadium,” said Wagnon, who was en route Thursday to Topeka, Kan., for Saturday’s Lower Kanza Bowl pitting Midwestern State of the LSC against Washburn (Kan.) of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Conference.
“But this thing has evolved quite a bit from my first conversations with the Gulf South commissioner,” Wagnon said. “What we’ve proposed to our presidents has changed quite a bit from what it started out. What’s being proposed is more of a Lone Star Conference event rather than a joint venture between the two.”

A Great Season
We came up a little short 35-31. It was a great game and a great season.
The Texas A&M-Kingsville football team was 18 seconds away from slaying the beast on Saturday afternoon at Javelina Stadium, but the defending national champions Northwest Missouri State once again found a way to win in the NCAA Division II Playoffs with a 35-31 victory. (box score)Bearcat (11-1) All-American quarterback Blake Bolles swung a pass out to tight end Josh Baker who was able to out run the Javelinas (10-2) to the corner of the end zone for a winning score from three yards out. It was the same corner where Tarleton State’s Scott Grantham had scored to defeat the Javelinas in the playoffs last year in double overtime.
The Javelinas had one last chance, but a Hail Mary attempt went incomplete on the final play of the game. The game opened with everything going the way of the Javelinas. The Bearcats lost a fumble on the opening drive of the game when a snap went over the head of Bolles and into the hands of Kendrick Matthews (Houston/Marshall HS) of the Hoggies. The Javelinas converted the turnover into a Christian Brom (McAllen/McAllen HS) 28-yard field goal just 4:30 into the game.
The Javelina defense forced a three-and-out and the offense was back on the move. They converted a pair of third downs that eventually led to an Arron Fisher (Orlando, FL/West Orange HS) 3-yard touchdown run with 3:57 left in the first quarter.
The Bearcats responded with one of their patented quick-strike scoring drives. Bolles connected with Tyler Shaw on a 41-yard scoring pass thanks to excellent pass protection from his line. Todd Adolf’s extra-point made it 10-7 with 2:29 left in the quarter.
The Javelinas struck right back before the end of the quarter. Jonathon Woodson’s (Missouri City/Marshall HS) 44-yard kick return set the team up with excellent field position. Three plays later Nate Poppell (Spring/Spring HS) connected with Robert Armstrong (Cuero/Cuero HS) on a 16-yard touchdown pass with1:09 to play in the first quarter.
The Bearcats pulled back to within a field goal after a 10-play, 83-yard drive was capped by an 11-yard run by Bolles with 3:15 left in the first half. Bolles went 7-for-7 on the drive, but it was Kelvin Austin’s 29-yard run that was the big play of the drive.
Late in the half, the Javelinas were driving for another score, but were stopped at the 35-yard line of the Bearcats. Poppell appeared to have picked up the first down on a fourth down run, but was ruled down before picking up the necessary yardage.
The Bearcats opened the second half by attempting an onside kick, but the Hoggies were able to recover the ball. They took advantage by scoring on a 28-yard touchdown pass from Poppell to Ryan Lincoln (Bastrop/Bastrop HS) to take a 24-14 lead with 12:14 left in the third quarter.
After the teams traded punts, the Bearcats took over at their own 7-yard line. They proceeded to drive 93 yards in 13 plays over 4:33. Bolles completed a 27-yard pass to Jake Soy on third down and then he completed an 8-yard pass to Jordan Simmons on fourth down to keep the drive going on two occasions. They scored on a 1-yard race to the corner by Simmons with 1:00 to play in the quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Javelinas scored on their first play when Lincoln broke two tackles on a reverse and scored on a 69-yard run to put the team ahead, 31-21.
The Hog defense forced a three-and-out and the offense was driving when a pass from Poppell got away from him and fell into the hands of Marciele Surrell.
The Bearcats took advantage of the miscue driving 56 yards in five plays. They were helped by a pair of pass interference calls against the Javelinas. Bolles connected with Baker on a 29-yard gain and then hit a wide open Soy in the end zone from 11 yards out with 10:19 remaining.
The Northwest defense then stepped up and shut down the Javelina offense over the next few minutes forcing three punts in a five minute stretch that proved to be critical. The Javelinas appeared to have regained the momentum after Tressor Baptiste (New York, NY/Curtis HS) forced a fumble that was recovered by Marcus Sanders (Houston/Westfield HS) with 5:38 left in the game. The Bearcats did not budge and got the ball back with 4:02 to play.
Bolles directed the Bearcats on a third long drive covering 80 yards in 12 plays. They converted on a pair of third downs and crossed into the red zone after a Javelina penalty to set up the winning score to Baker.
For the Bearcats it was their 12th consecutive win against Super Region 4 opponents and sixth straight win in the playoffs overall.
The Javelinas gained 420 yards on offense with 188 coming on the ground and 268 through the air. Lincoln led the offense with five catches for 94 yards, three carries for 79 yards and two touchdowns as he closed out a brilliant career. Woodson added 136 all-purpose yards while Armstrong added seven catches for 65 yards. Poppell finished the game 25-of-38 for 268 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.
Lincoln finished his career with a school record 210 receptions for 2,926 yards (2nd all-time). He led the team with 10 touchdowns on the season.
Poppell broke the school record for single season completions with 237 bettering Billy Garza’s mark of 225 set last year.
The Bearcats gained 470 yards of offense with 90 on the ground and 380 through the air. It was the most yards the Javelinas have given up all season long. Bolles went 32-of-53 for 380 yards and three touchdowns. His favorite target was Soy who had 12 catches for a career high 161 yards and a touchdown. Baker added eight catches for 87 yards and a score. Austin led the team with 52 yards on seven carries.
The Javelina defense’s top six tacklers in the game were all seniors. Baptiste finished with a career high 11 stops, a forced fumble and a pass break up. DeIra Glover (Hempstead/Hempstead HS) capped his four-year career with nine tackles while fellow safety Corey Robertson (Denison/Denison HS) added seven tackles and two pass break ups.
The Bearcats were led by linebacker Chad Kilgore and defensive lineman Josh Lorenson. Kilgore had 11 tackles while Lorenson had 10 stops, two sacks and four tackles for loss.
The Bearcats advance to host conference rival Central Missouri on December 4 at noon in Maryville, Missouri.

Alvarado's Advice
I urge all of you to enjoy your life, every precious moment on this earth. Spend each day with some laughter. Don't be afraid to feel; to get your emotions going. Be enthusiastic, because nothing great can be accomplished without enthusiasm. Live your dreams. ~Jim Valvano

Matt Romig's Website
Kirby Ellason and her sister, combined their ideas together and created a website for Matt Romig. The website can be found by going to this link http://www.mattromig.com/
This is what she had to say about creating the website.
"We just wanted to create a website to get Matt's story out there. I know people around the nation have heard about his story already, so I wanted to put direct links to the tshirt orders, family blog, and donation account for Matt.
We know how much football means to Matt, so what better way than starting up the website and tshirts before playoffs start. Since he can't be at the games or tailgates, I am going to document it all for him through pictures and videos so that I can bring Hog Nation to him.
I chose the FIGHT FINISH FAITH, because those 3 words are what Matt is about. He's a fighter and with the positive attitude he has and the support of TAMUK, he will overcome this. “Minor setback for a major comeback!!""

Hot One
Today the temperature was a blazing 86 degrees at our 1pm practice. Overall we had a good practice as the players got used to what it was like being out sweating in the heat. We will come back at 5pm to have position meetings and a team meeting at 6pm.
Early Practice
Today we will be practicing at 1pm. The school is closing and will not having any classes after 12pm. With the 1pm kickoff this weekend it will also be good to have the team practicing at the same time we will be playing.
Alvarado's Advice
At 211 degrees water is very hot. At 212 water boils. Boiling water produces steam. Steam can power a locomotive. 1 degree makes a big difference. 1 degree is the difference between winners and losers. In a typical Olympics 100 meter sprint, the average time of victory between 1st and 2nd place is .2 seconds. The blink of an eye separates an Olympic champion and a contestant not even on the medal stand. In the Indy 500 1.5 seconds separates 1st place and 2nd place. 1st place brings home 1 million dollars. 2nd place brings home 2 thousands dollars. Bottom line is it's your life. Decide what's important.

D Block
The defensive line and a lot of the players went to eat breakfast this morning at "The Tap" after lifting weights.
Rise and Grind
The team was up early at 6:30am today to workout as team. We lifted this morning so the players could go home this weekend since they will not have a chance to go home Thanksgiving due to practice for the playoff game.
Alvarado's Advice
You wouldn't sit down in a marathon at mile 20 because you couldn't see the finish line, would you? And because you know the distance, you know there will be a finish line at mile 26.2. You know the line won't keep moving farther away. My prayer today is that, even in the times when our view becomes obstructed, we won't sit down. May we, instead, run to our Savior who is waiting for us. He's not going anywhere, of that we can be sure. The very trail we've started on has been cleared by Him for us to see Him better if we just keep moving.

Prayers Please
There are many who believe the true quest for Texas A&M-Kingsville’s fourth-ranked football team begins next weekend in the second round of the NCAA Division II Super Regional Four playoffs.
A very real fight already has begun for Javelinas sophomore defensive end Matt Romig.
While the 10-1 Javelinas enjoy a bye week in preparation for an encounter with either Northwest Missouri State or Missouri Western in the second round, the 21-year-old Romig is beginning his battle against a form of leukemia.
“They’re trying to figure out what it is. Their thinking is that he has cancer of some sort,” Javelinas coach Bo Atterberry said. “They’re just trying to figure out what it is.”
Doctors at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston now have a better handle on Romig’s condition. The talented 6-foot-4, 235-pounder underwent his first round of chemotherapy Thursday.
The Romig family has established a blog — http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/mattromig — where family, friends and fans can log on and keep abreast of the player’s condition. According to the initial posting, Romig is suffering from a form of leukemia called Blastic Plasmacytoid Dendritic Cell Neoplasm (BPDCN). Doctors tell the family it is a rare form of the disease, which affects the body’s production of white blood cells. Physicians told the family that fewer than 50 patients have been treated for it at M.D. Anderson, and that fewer than 200 cases have been reported worldwide.
“Matt is in a fight of his life. He has a positive outlook,” the Romig family blog reads. “He feels strongly that he is going to win. And we do, too.”
Romig came to Kingsville from his hometown of Bells, a town of some 1,300 people located 70 miles northeast of Dallas and a strong stone’s throw from the Red River. That seven-plus hour trek to South Texas will be nothing like the journey he is about to embark. And Romig is ready for it.
“It is a type of leukemia but very treatable and curable and (I have a) very good outlook,” Romig wrote in an email.
Romig burst onto the scene as a redshirt freshman last year, stepping into the void created when returning All-American candidate Jimmy Lugo was ruled academically ineligible. He led the team with six sacks and 11 tackles for loss.
This year, Romig led Division II at one point in sacks. With six sacks, he still leads the Javelinas and would rank among the Lone Star Conference and national leaders if he had played in enough games.
Romig was named to the all-Lone Star Conference South Division second team Wednesday. He started eight games this year, missing the Angelo State ballgame with what was then diagnosed as strep throat. That appears to have been the first domino to fall that led to his current condition.
An ailing Romig was taken to a Corpus Christi hospital on Nov. 8 for tests. Shortly thereafter, he was transferred to M.D. Anderson.
So far, Romig said via email he has received well-wishes from his hometown to South Texas to the East Coast.
“The main focus I would like to have is the overwhelming support and love I have received from my family and friends, the Javelina community and my hometown community,” Romig said in an email. “(People) that have only heard about me, who I don’t really know, and such unexpected donations from my mom’s workplace, and not only the statewide but national support I am receiving.”
A majority of his teammates have posted words of support on Romig’s Facebook page. Romig said he is anxious to return to the ballclub.
“We are in very good spirits and I’m positive I’m going to beat this and play Javelina football again!” Romig said in an email.

Please keep Matt Romig and his family in your prayers.
